For Chapter 1: Travel, Sjögren has developed a very personal body of work which embodies her love and experience of her world travels. This offers the audience a glimpse into a visual diary of childhood memories, themes from explorations and experiences, and symbols from her home.
Sjögren constructs and maintains a humour that runs through the work and informs how we should read each piece. These works were originally conceived for luxury brand window displays but proved to attract more interest than the products on display. Sjögren has been waiting for a time to develop them into major art works. In this way she has been freed from budget and time constraints and able to push each of the works to perfection.
Having spent over two thirds of her life traveling and living abroad Sjögren has kept a diary documenting some of her thoughts and ideas. Cultural heritage and tradition are particularly important to Sjögren. In her art work she has tried to capture what she describes as the country's 'soul'. She has translated these ideas into the flags. In a fast paced world, where everything changes the flag remains a well known and unchanging symbol that gives people a sense of belonging.
During her travels she has lived not only in major international cities but also immersed herself deeply in nature, traveling through remote villages where ancient traditions and religion are still alive and part of daily life. Sjögren has born witness to major political and societal shifts which have taken place through revolution, natural disasters and violence. Observing the contrasts between privilege and poverty has influenced her views about the countries' identity. Her perceptions have been coloured by these extremes making her interpretations of the country distinctive. This combined with the fact that she speaks four languages and that her family is spread over five countries, forms the basis for this exhibition and is the reason the work is autobiographical in nature.
Sjögren intends to make a series of fifty flags with Sweden and America being the first two installments. In this exhibition the connections made between the two countries are intricate and deep-rooted. The US is often thought to not have a significant cultural history when compared with that of Europe. However, it is often overlooked that each of the fifty states has its own provincial heritage; its own flower, herb, tree and animal. Sweden has adopted this system of representation and given each of its own twenty five provinces their symbols of nature, coat of arms and clothing. In their interaction with the flag people are drawn to the place that they can call home sweet home. The flag symbolises home no matter where we are in life or the world.
In the second part of this body of work Sjögren uses the image of trusted dog and puppy to communicate her own desires and fears. Each handmade dog has its own character and story which is built up layer by layer to encapsulate a particular time in the artist's life and a facet of her personality. Sjögren comments: "This exhibition is not simply about the process of journeying around the world; it is about specific events, times and places from my life, and each work encapsulates particular thoughts, memories and emotions".
